Retreat: Abundant Simplicity
Session 1: Abundant Simplicity: Unhurried Rhythms of Grace (50 minutes or more)
Abundant Simplicity is about choosing the engaging, relational life we were meant to live. By shedding self-indulgence and pretension, we can become intentional about what we do and how we live. This allows God's power to move through us and bless others because we have more time, love and space to do good.
(Psalm 23 Meditations)
Add as many or as few sessions as you like from these options.
Option 1: The Intentional, Unhurried Life (Simplicity of time) (45-60 minutes)
Our busyness addiction leaves little time for love to make its home in us. We need to prayerfully consider: What’s running me? What do I really want from life? What is God inviting me into? The Spirit can them help us arrange our life for times of hard work, quiet hiddenness, and abundant leisure that leads us to enjoy God and enjoy others.
Option 2: Fewness and Fullness of Words (Simplicity of Speech) (45-60 minutes)
Our mouth seems to have a life of its own as we use words to manage and control people and situations. We first examine motives behind our many words and then small, practical ways to be “quick to listen and slow to speak,” blessing people with our words.
Option 3: Living Light in a Land of Plenty (Frugality) (45 minutes)
Simplicity comes to our life as we abstain from acquiring stuff to make ourselves look and feel better. Simple, realistic expressions of this discipline help us develop a satisfied heart that really believes that God is enough.
Option 4: Simplicity of Service: Purpose in Life (45-60 minutes)
Unless we learn to say yes to what breaks our heart that breaks the heart of God, service easily deteriorates into overcommitment and activities that seem to make no difference. Understanding God’s redemptive purposes helps us focus on God-motivated avenues of service.
